Stop & Shop to Close Four Long Island Stores

Today, Stop & Shop has announced plans to close 32 underperforming stores by the end of the year as part of its growth strategy, including four locations on Long Island. This decision aims to streamline operations and strengthen the company’s presence across its five-state footprint, which will still include over 350 stores after the closures.

The closures will be completed by November 2, 2024. Impacted employees will be offered opportunities to transfer to other Stop & Shop locations. Specific closure dates for each store will be communicated to local customers in advance.

The Long Island locations slated to be closed include:

  • 130 Wheatley Plaza, Greenvale
  • 294 Middle Country Road, Coram
  • 132 Fulton Ave., Hempstead
  • 2525 Hempstead Turnpike, East Meadow

Gordon Reid, President of Stop & Shop, emphasized the company’s commitment to its communities and the importance of adapting to ensure future growth.

“We remain dedicated to nourishing our associates, customers, and communities,” Reid said. “By closing underperforming stores, we aim to create a healthy base for our brand’s future.”

Since 2018, the company has remodeled over 190 stores, which the company says resulted in improved performance compared to non-remodeled locations. The company plans to continue these updates across its remaining stores.

Despite the closures, Stop & Shop will maintain a significant presence in its markets, including 91 stores in New York. The company will continue to serve its customers through other store locations, online shopping, and home delivery services.
