Wendy’s to Close Hundreds of U.S. Restaurants in 2026 as Sales Slide

The iconic fast-food chain Wendy’s has announced plans to close a substantial number of its U.S. restaurants in the coming months as part of a strategic effort to improve profitability and strengthen its overall operations.

Interim CEO Ken Cook told investors on the company’s recent earnings call that about 5% to 6% of Wendy’s nearly 6,000 domestic locations will be shuttered by mid-2026. That translates to roughly 240 to 360 restaurants nationwide that could close their doors.

Why Wendy’s Is Cutting Back

The closures come amid ongoing challenges for the chain, which reported a significant drop in same-store sales in late 2025 and overall declines in customer traffic. As Wendy’s works to reverse that trend, the company says focusing resources on its best-performing locations will help the brand remain competitive in a tough fast-food market.

Cook indicated that the restaurants targeted for closure are typically those that have struggled financially or failed to meet performance expectations. Many of the affected units are older or less efficient and shutting them is intended to allow franchisees to reinvest in stronger locations.

What This Means for Customers

Wendy’s hasn’t released a list of specific restaurants slated for closure. The company has said the process will begin in the coming months, with closures rolling out throughout early to mid-2026.

In conjunction with the closures, Wendy’s is also placing a greater emphasis on value-oriented menu offerings, including new price-tiered meals designed to attract cost-conscious diners.

A Continued Shift in Strategy

This isn’t the first time the chain has pared back its footprint. In 2024, Wendy’s closed about 240 underperforming U.S. locations as part of earlier efforts to modernize and boost results.

Executives assert that the latest round of closures, while significant, is part of a broader repositioning to make Wendy’s more efficient and ultimately more appealing to customers as they tighten their dining budgets.
